Its what is inside that counts Part 2.

Now the pregnancy phase and beyond for parents and painting.

To enable it to dry on the walls, most modern paints, use solvents which gas off into the air setting the paint in the process. This is the horrible wet paint smell that so many people react to adversely. Do not be fooled, the smell may settle down after a few days but that product continues to gas off for up to 5-7 years, leading to a litany of health issues.

Now due to the regulatory push to lower VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) in paints many companies have swapped their high level of solvents by adding new chemical plasticisers instead. The frightening list of chemicals involved would give anyone nightmares. Also remember that although the tin may say low VOC on the label, the tint used to colour it, will most likely not be. Most readily used tints are high in VOC’s.  More slightly sneaky underhand deception by the big corporates.

Even worse, now, some companies to make their products supposedly more washable are using Nano particles to form protective plasticised top layers. Because this Nano mesh layer makes the painted surface unable to breath they then have to add anti-fungal anti-Bacterial chemicals into the mix.

There are at this point, no regulations, about adding Nano particles to paint. Let me stress, that no long-term scientific studies have been undertaken to work out what effect these particles will have on humans and the environment. These particles are smaller than the cells in the body and can quite literally go anywhere. Remember asbestos anyone?

Finally, all being well, the baby or babies arrive into the world.  At this point the average baby sleeps 10- 18 hours a day. By now you have no doubt realised that the air quality and chemical safety of inside that sleeping environment is critical to promoting infant wellbeing. Tiny lungs and developing brains surely deserve the best options and that means only using the correct decoration products.

That leads to the last inside, what is inside truly safe paint products.  First there are no heavy metals, or harmful plasticisers and they are 100 % solvent free in base and tint. They allow the walls to breath and are composed to offer great wash-ability without Nano particles. Then the paints are strictly tested and pass the highest European standards for ethical, health and environmental qualities.

This is why Colourfied only offers paint products that will enhance your life with beautiful colours not endanger it. Great safe paint designed for use in all three stages of parenthood. Its what is inside that counts. Part 1.

There are three main phases in becoming a parent. The pre-pregnancy, the pregnancy and finally the protégé. At each stage it is what happens inside is that counts.

During pre-pregnancy what happens with in the body’s and hormone systems of prospective parents sets the stage for successful conception and a healthy outcome. More and more scientific reports point to the ill effects of exposure to chemicals and environmental toxins to the endocrine system of humans.  Unfortunately, most prospective parents are blissfully unaware, one of the key sources of these pollutants is domestic house paint. The vast majority of readily available commercial paint products are not just pretty but actually pretty awful when it comes to the air we breathe, what we absorb and were we live.

Governments have slowly begun to address this issue by tightening regulations as to paint content but it is a far from where it needs to be. Standards vary wildly and worse still allow unscrupulous companies to “greenwash” their products. This is a travesty for people actually trying to make the right choices when it comes to paint product selection.

Once the pregnancy is in place expectant parents go to huge lengths to ensure the inside of Mum to be, remains safe and free from risk. However, the nesting urge to decorate baby’s first space, drive many into the land of unsafe paint products.

Special Vision

For years now, I have been studying the the physical and mental effect that colour has on humans. Recently I have come across some great information on how colour affects children who are classified as having ASD – (Autism Syndrome Disorder). Research has found that children with ASD, have anomalies in their eye components due to chemical imbalances or neural deficiencies. They also appear to use a lot of peripheral vision and head tilting to view objects. ASD can now be diagnosed from around two tears old.

Controlled colour testing on children with ASD has produced some quite astounding results. In summary, of the ASD children tested, 85% perceived colours with a far greater intensity than non ASD children. Red, especially appeared as a fluorescent, vividly vibrating colour. Of the remaining group tested, only 10% had colour vision similar to non ASD children. The last 5% had colour vision which meant that they could not perceive muted colours. Of all the test children they were the only ones to seek out intense, vibrant and primary colours as normally they see everything as shades of grey. Most families who care for ASD children, are well aware of the issues surrounding sounds and texture sensory sensitivities but little is made of this area of colour sensory.

Colour selection, is a major issue in fact, in the decoration of rooms and environments for ASD children. There are however, some good well founded rules for embarking on this task. Designers or parents should try to use muted, natural colours which have a calming effect. Less is definitely more, with monochromatic colour schemes working well. Cool soft greens and blues are also soothing. Surprisingly pale pink appears to be the most successful colour. This can seem counter intuitive to most of us, when considering there are four boys to every one girl with ASD.

Here at Colourfied we have made a natural/neutral paint inspirations board, to enable you to get a feel for the colours in our range, that will work well, within these guide lines. It is also worth noting that our non toxic paint has no smell and a very smooth matt velvet texture, both features are ideal for use with the sensory sensitive.  We believe that special kids have special needs and we are here to help. Anyone wanting free assistance or advise in this area should simply contact us.

The beginning of being.

After great effort or just an amazing surprise, the words are spoken that will quite literally change your life for ever. Congratulations, in just under nine months from now expect a new life to enter the world.  I remember being swept up in a vortex of emotions as the news was confirmed. Then later, as the world around me settled again, came the strange thought that this was one train ride you cannot get off until the station of your personal destination is reached. You are it for the long haul, no matter what nature brings, one has become part of a remarkable process that some how has a life force all of its own.

As a women ,your body is no longer your own, it has become an enclosure for the miracle of creation. As a partner one has to take on the role of carer, protector, supporter and sometimes even a kicking post for pent up feelings, one hell of a roller coaster ride.

The desire to do the right thing in all regards is a pressing and urgent need for both parties. High among these is the nesting instinct, the need to create a safe external enclosure for that precious gift that is going to arrive. So much to take in and decide.

The best designer advise I can give is as follows, get the foundations right and everything can slot in and build up as it evolves. The foundation of any safe baby space starts with the walls and that means paint. This is were it is so important only to decorate with a specialist product that has no toxins, solvents or hidden chemicals, yet will be easy to maintain. Colourfied offers that choice, all the worry removed, so you can just relax and enjoy creating the visual environment you dream of. Check out our Pinterest pages for inspiration and ideas.

The paint we supply was actually used for the Giant Panda enclosure in SA. because it was so pure and practical. Now if your Baby or perhaps Babies are as precious to you as a Giant Panda then it is pretty much a no brainer what to choose.  Paint so safe even expectant Mums can use it.

Preparing the way

2018 here we come. New Year is a time to let go of the past and to plan for the future. For some of us that will involve planning for, or preparing to become parents. It is really important to understand that what we do before the moment of conception can be an invaluable foundation for helping that miracle to occur. There are all the obvious lifestyle changes such as no smoking, restricting the use of alcohol and other recreational substances, losing weight, a healthy varied diet, exercise and reducing stress. However how much do we consider the possible ill effects of the environment we expose ourselves to?

The stats are in, between 1973 – 2011 the male sperm count has dropped by 52% in Western countries. Although there are a multitude of factors at play here, one that keeps  rearing its head, is that of environmental pollution and exposure to harmful toxins. The list goes on and on including, formaldehyde, benzene, toluene, methylene chloride, xylene, organic esters (plasticisers) and solvents. What, you may ask, do all these substances have in common? They are all widely used and present in most commonly available household paints. Even in many of the ones that claim to be low VOC.

Now, Napoleon did not expect to be poisoned by his choice of wall paper/paint but he was, because it was full of arsenic. Nor do we expect to be “poisoned” by our choice of decorating materials but we are. These substances leeching and gassing out of paint products in our homes have been shown to cause endocrine disruption. In layman’s terms they mess up our hormones in both sexes. Not great for anyone, let alone those trying for a family. Plus just consider, the long term damage being done to our health.

So what to do? Get out the paint brushes and provocatively cover up/seal in all the horrors with safe non toxic, 100 % solvent free paint, guaranteed to not contain harmful substances. Not only will it beautify your home, it will make it good to live in. Here at Colourfied that is why we only supply paint products tested to the highest European standards. This makes the task of home “environmental health repairs” easy affordable work.

So, after a hard day at the office and your partner meets you at the door with a chart, thermometer and ice cubes, your new fresh, safe, colourful interior, maybe just what you need to help set the mood.

Ultra and Aqua

What a month, two glimpses of humanity, one that everyone has an equal right to bind themselves in love and a small window of choice in Victoria for those whose life’s journey is run. On a more selfish note it was also, my 60th birthday.

To celebrate and I mean celebrate, my family and I went to Noosa. No depression for me, just a great overwhelming feeling that 60 is my time to shine. Arrived in the rain then in the twinkle of an eye out came the sub tropical sun.

Journeyed to Rainbow beach (very fitting don’t you think) and there it was, golden sand, crystal clear water and you guessed it every shade of Ultra and Aquamarine. The Australian summer in all its glory, simply an overload of visual wonder. As I stood at the sea edge, the breeze blew the last tried threads of 50 clean away.

Did not go swimming at the beach. This is migratory whale time on this coast and to be honest, I feared setting of the Whale Strand Surf Rescue Team. Note to self: remember to book dietitian!!!!

Instead I just soaked the colour into my soul. As an imported Aussie I can say with my hand on heart this is indeed the lucky country. Bring out all the blues, the green blues the turquoise, the deep aqua, the pool party, summer time, even storm skies, just go with the flow of summer at its very best.  Plus with Coloufied paint so safe, friendly to humans and the world, you can create the mood with a completely clear conscience.

Go on, live a little.

White light

Everyone wants a safe home, but for some among us, behind closed doors there is actually a lot of darkness. That darkness takes the form of family violence and in particular violence against women. Forget the stereotypes, this issue may well be found in areas of social deprivation but make no mistake, it is also there in the smartest suburbs around.

On an extremely personal note, my first husband used to boast and I quote, “that I abuse you everyday but because I do it with words, nobody can see what I do.” So believe me when I say, that even in the most painful of times, there is light waiting to be found and hope at the end of the tunnel. That is why for me, the fact that White Ribbon day is represented by a white ribbon, is so important.   www.whiteribbon.org.au

I love white, it is the colour of purity, healing and hope. White light contains within its beautiful spectrum all the colours of the world. Cool whites and warm whites, from polar bears to angel wings, the expression of white in decor is simply endless in its possibilities. It can form a blank canvas on which to express your individuality or create a serene space to hold your new born child.

At Colourfied, we wish everyone can find their way to let the white light in.
